Obesity1 has been growing fast in children since the 1980s. Research shows that about a third of American children are overweight. The government is taking some action in order to change this situation.
On Tuesday July 29, government officials of south Los Angeles, California, voted to stop new fast food restaurants from moving into the area for a whole year. This is because more than 70% of restaurants there are fast food restaurants; and 30% of adults living there are over-weight.
This is the first time that a big city has taken action to provide people with healthier food choices. Though it is not an official law, many believe that the rule will be a good thing. Rebeca Torres, a mother of four in south Los Angeles, is looking forward to change. "They should have better things for children to eat."
Not everyone is pleased with the government’s action. People at the fast-food restaurants feel that the rule is unfair. "It’s not where you eat; it’s what you eat,"explains the CEO of CKE Restaurants, Andrew Pudzer.
Some people still think that parents are responsible2 for what their children eat. Though parents cannot control everything the children put into their mouths, they can learn to make healthy food at home and talk to them about the importance of a healthy diet.

Each year, prizes are given to adults that achieve great goals in art, writing, science and economics. So why not give awards to children, too?
Harry Leibowitz asked himself this question in 1996. As an answer, he and his wife, Kay, created the World of Children organization and began handing out awards to children and adults whose work has helped children all over the world. The nickname1 of the awards is the "Children’s Nobel Prize."
"You know, children are so important,"Leibowitz said. "We should have prizes for children if we’re going to have prizes for everything else."
World of Children gave six adults and two children awards at its 11th annual "Change Makers for Children Awards Ceremony". It was held at UNICEF2 House in New York City.
Talia Leman is a girl who comes from Iowa, America. She was awarded a Founder’s Youth Award for Leadership. She is only 13 years old, but she has already done a lot.     She also offers help to other young people who want to help children in need.

—By Jean
China used to be called the "Kingdom of Bicycles", but now the streets are crowded with cars. The growth of cars has made many cities widen their streets for cars, but narrow the pavements1 for people. The increasing number of cars is also a big problem for the environment.
In order to reduce the number of cars on the streets and protect the environment, the government has started a movement —it set a national "Car-Free Day"on September 22 in 2007. On that day each year, from 7 am to 7 pm, cities are encouraged to set aside a part of a street or road and make it open only to people, public buses, taxis and cyclists2. People have different opinions about this policy.
Zhang Peng is a young man in Beijing. He drives to his office every day. "This is the first time I have gone to work by bus, and it is almost as convenient as driving,"he said. "I will use public transportation more often and invite my friends to join the movement."Zhang Peng is not the only one who supports this movement. Many young people believe that the movement will be good for the environment.
However, others said that a car-free day would not change anything. "Can we make a difference by not driving just for one day? What we really need is better traffic management. It should be better traffic management for 365 days a year, instead of a day without cars,"said Huang Tao, who also drives to work.
