垃圾大扫除

最近，英国发起了史上最大的一次捡垃圾活动——垃圾大扫除。活动的组织者号召全英国人一起动手，清理自己身边的垃圾，共建干净、整洁的环境。

The biggest litter pick in history, the Big Tidy Up, was started in Britain. It is another campaign after Keep Britain Tidy.

The Big Tidy Up campaign encourages people throughout England to get together and clean up their local areas. It is open to all. People from schools, groups and businesses work together to make their neighborhoods clean.

The National Federation of Women’s Institute has promised to support it and thousands of its members are set to take part.

More than half a century ago, the chair of the National Federation of Women’s Institute, Elizabeth Brunner, started the movement —Keep Britain Tidy.

Two of Brunner’s great grand-daughters are again repeating that call. They will wear clothes from that time and hold placards with the very first slogan, "Please Take Litter Home". One of them said, "We have heard all about our great grandmother and how she started Keep Britain Tidy. We think she was cool to start it because she didn’t like litter and we don’t like litter, either."

Phil Barton, the manager of Keep Britain Tidy, said, "The Big Tidy Up is the biggest organized litter pick in this country. Thousands of schools, businesses and groups have already taken part in it and want to make a difference."

About half a million bags of litter have been collected in this campaign.
