If Sydney is called the New York of the South Pacific, then Melbourne can be called the London of the South Pacific.
This is an ancient and beautiful "garden city". Streets are orderly planned and various buildings of both old and modern styles are harmoniously put together. There are many operas and Broadway musicals1 on show here every day.
This is also the residential2 center for immigrants3 in Australia. Most of the immigrants live in Melbourne and Sydney. Immigrants start their new life here but keep their own traditions and customs. Do you want to taste Italian food and drinks? Just go to Lygon Street. Want to know more about Chinese culture? Then visit Chinatown. In Chinatown, you will find not only Chinese restaurants, but also Malaysian, Thai and Japanese restaurants. This is not just a window to China, but also a window to East and Southeast Asia.
Goods sold in Chinatown are quite spe-cial. You’ll have a variety of choices at reasonable prices, and that’s why China-town is so popular with tourists. My friends all came back with large shopping bags, and were reluctant to leave until they bought too much to carry.
Another thing which is worth mention-ing is that Melbourne is home to the smallest penguins in the world. In a place 140 kilometers south of Melbourne, there’s a tiny island called Philip Island. Early every evening, groups of penguins come back to their home on this island.

We woke up on a very nice day. There was no wind at the airport. We started flying north and the trip was interesting.
A bit further south we saw a few villages built out of mud, and in every walled place there was grass that had been harvested from the surrounding lands. There were people living on the edge, but they were doing it with dignity* and a spirit of looking forward, not backward. Yet they have fewer and fewer resources and they have more and more mouths to feed. Like so many places we have seen, this population is using up the capital of the natural resource base. They’re eating every plant right down to its roots and getting every bit of mineral and water from the land possible. Humans are humans, and there is one way to change this situation very quickly: start mining groundwater. In this aspect Chad (乍得)is still in great ecological condition compared to areas in the southwest of the United States where much of the fossil water has already been used to grow cotton, onions and so on. We have heard that there are more oil fields waiting to be put into production in Chad so the day may soon come. But now it is the time to take a serious look at the natural resource base here and start to push things in the right direction.
