More than any other season, winter is a time for being inside. It’s colder outside, and we need extra calories to stay warm. Nothing is more satisfying on a dark winter day than a hearty bowl of hot soup. We encourage you to think about winter as a time to celebrate the warmth of eating.

Foods that warm you are a great choice in this season. In some traditions, like that of Oriental medicine, warming foods include foods that take longer to grow. These foods include most root vegetables (like carrots) and most cruciferous1 vegetables (like cabbage). Compared with leafy vegetables (like lettuce) that tend to grow much more quickly, these root vegetables and crucifers make excellent winter foods. Since we tend to go inside and move less during the winter, the smaller and denser2 foods seem like a great choice for this season. Winter is the time to store up heavier and high-calorie foods. Whole grains make a perfect winter choice. Seeds are another great example of a nutritious winter food. Sunflower and sesame seeds are considered especially warming in some traditions. Dried beans used in preparing hearty winter soups also fit this category.

Winter is also a great season for getting together with friends and family around a relaxed, well-prepared meal. The sharing of food can be one of the most peaceful and enjoyable experiences of winter. The warmth of a shared meal can help ease one’s mood and reduce one’s feeling of pressure during this time. "Selecting, preparing, and enjoying" are the keys to mental health during this part of the year.

Sweet potatoes aren’t really potatoes; they’re a completely different kind of vegetable. There are over 100 kinds of edible potatoes that range in size, shape, color, starch1 content and flavor, but the sweet potato is not one of them. These two root vegetables belong to completely different families and feature different tastes and unique nutritional benefits. The potato’s scientific name, Solanum tuberosum, indicates that it belongs to the Solanaceae family. Other members of this family include tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and tomatillos2.

The sweet potato, on the other hand, belongs to the Convolvulaceae plant family, and its scientific name is Ipomoea batatas. The well-known flower, "Morning Glory", belongs to the same botanical3 family as the sweet potato. Sweet potatoes taste delicious, are easy to prepare, and can be used in a variety of dishes.

Although sweet potatoes were introduced into U.S. supermarkets relatively recently compared to other foods, they are not new to the global market. The growing of sweet potatoes dates back about 4,500 years in Central and South America. Christopher Columbus recognized their uniqueness, and brought them back to Spain following his first voyage to North America in 1492. Sweet potatoes are now planted throughout tropical4 and warm temperate areas wherever there is enough water to support their growth.

According to 2004 FAO data, world production of sweet potatoes is 127,000,000 tons. The majority comes from China, which produces 105,000,000 tonnes. About half the Chinese crop is used as livestock feed.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A. How to eat street food without ruining your trip

B. Always follow the crowd.

C. Don’t forget to ask the locals.

D. Never trust strangers.

E. Keep your hands clean.

F. Fill yourself up with starch.

G. Watch it cook.

In his new book, Street Food: Exploring the World’s Most Authentic Tastes, Tom Kime, a chef who has worked in top restaurants in London, Sydney and Malta, tells us how to make 89 of the dishes he liked best in his many trips around the globe. He also gives tips on finding the most delicious food, and avoiding an upset stomach, or worse.

    1

A line of people in front of a restaurant always shows that the food there is tasty and fresh —it never sits idly1 for long. If a restaurant on a busy street has no customers, there’s probably a reason.

    2

The best recommendations I get are from taxi drivers, policemen, shop owners and office workers. The locals are the people who will give you good information about where to go. They only eat what they like and what doesn’t make them sick.

      3

Always request that your food be cooked fresh for you. A hot grill2 will usually kill any germs3 that are present. And a plate of steaming noodles is safer than food left out for hours at a hotel buffet.

     4

There’s no way to know what’s on anyone else’s hands, but you can at least get the germs off your own. Store a bunch of antibacterial wipes4 in your bag and wash your hands frequently —especially just before you eat.

    5

If your stomach is upset, eat plain starchy food, such as rice, bread and noodles, until you feel better. Bananas are excellent because they’re packed with vitamins and minerals that can restore your body’s internal balance.

Notes:

1. idly adv.空闲地

2. grill n.烤架

3. germ n.微生物

4. antibacterial wipe 消毒湿巾
